trim & doors

So many changes and I think I'm in love!  I posted a while back that I was working on my trim and doors.  And T.H.O.U.G.H.T that I was liking it.  I should have known when I decided to see what I thought after a few days.  Not so much.  So then I started on the hunt again.  I knew exactly what I wanted, or at least I thought I knew what I wanted.  I just couldn't get it. It took some time. BUT. . . Finally I have it.  We moved into our current home in October 2006.  I have never been a fan of the color of my trim.

First of all it helped when I decided to try out this paint brush.  Home Depot.  I have since bought me some more.  The handle is shorter and flexible.  Regular paint brushes make my hands cramp.  Not this one!  Just L.O.V.E it!

My next suggestion is the kit I bought from Home Depot.  It is a Rust-oleum cabinet kit.  Comes with a cleaner, scour pads, base coat paint, glaze, cheesecloth and clear coat.

This is a before picture.  From what I can figure out, the doors and trim were origonally blonde color.  I think maybe they used some gel stain at some point to try to make the finish darker.

The left side is the base coat with the glaze.  The right is just the base coat.

And this is Jessica's finished door.  Just got to put the handle back on.  Eventually I hope to do this finish on all the trim and all the doors in my house.  Hmmmm. . . . . what a job.  But somebody's got to do it.  :-)

Beauty. . . .

These pictures just don't do justice to this piece.  Not at all!!  Roger's and my bed is a taller.  So a regular nightstand just isn't tall enough.  When Roger asked back in September what I wanted to do for our anniversary. . . . it was to go to my favorite place and hunt for something for my side of the bed.  I just L.O.V.E the West Bottoms!!  This had been white wash painted.  And with everything in my bedroom being a dark finish, I HAD to take the time to sand and refinish dark too.  I L.O.V.E how this turned out!!

Shouts out to this guy!. . . . .

The last two days were Roger's days off this week.  And what a trooper this guy has been!  Wednesday was spent in Hays ~  DRX.  Dentist appt for both of us.  New reading glasses ordered for Roger.  New lenses for me.  A nice dinner at Applebee's.  Bank.  Vet's for Jorge and Lukes meds.  Orschelin's for dog food.  Home Depot.  And of course Wal-Mart for groceries.  Talk about crossing a lot off the to do list!  It truly makes it so much easier if he is with me on these trips.

Yesterday Roger was working in/under the kitchen.  Our kitchen is on the north end of our house.  Part of our house has the basement under it.  The kitchen end is just the crawl space.  BUT, when they built on the kitchen/bathroom/washroom they did not put an access to get to that area.  Duh!  The floor gets so cold in the winter.  And when you open the cabinets you could almost feel a breeze.  So Roger decided to make his own access.

When pulling up the kitchen floor this is what was on one of the boards.  Just cracks me up!

This is looking into the hole.  I can reach down and put my hand flat on the ground.  The floor hit my elbows.  Not much room to "crawl" around!  And yes, he is going in!  But no "crawling".  There was only enough room for him to lay on his back and scoot himself around.  (We won't tell you that he had to suck in his belly to go under some of the spots.)

Trip number one done!  ??? more to go.  Foam insulation was filled in the cracks.  Next will be putting insulation up under the floor.  We have hopes that it will not only warm up our floor, but also help keep it cooler this summer.

MY HERO!

Happy Friday. . . .

Our home was built in 1950.  :-)  From what we have been told it was a square four room home.  Kitchen/Dining. Living. And two bedrooms.  At some point the kitchen, a bathroom and laundry/furnace room was added.  Then about 1980 the basement and master bedroom/bathroom/walk in closet was added.  The old part of the house has the old original trim. But when they added on they just used the cheaper regular trim. I have decided that it would look so much nicer and would add soooo much to the looks if the trim was all the same. So. . . I've started with our bedroom door trim and the closet above the staircase.

It is taking some time, but I'm getting it done. And proud to say "mostly" by myself. Some lessons/reminders and a little help here and there from Roger. Just don't get in my way! That airgun is all mine!!

I can't wait to show it off when it is all done!

Angels among us. . . . .

I am obsessed with angel wings. This set is hanging on the wall of my bedroom. Every time I look at them. . . I think of my angel's in heaven.

our Jess. . . . . .

has been home for a few days visiting. And what good bonding we have had! This morning she is heading back to Topeka.    [{ f.r.o.w.n }]   But on a good note I will get to see her AND Mishi not this weekend, but the next. As I will be going to Topeka and we will be doing "The Color Vibe". Can't wait!! And then we are thinking of going to our favorite place. . . . The West Bottoms! This last weekend was the first Friday weekend, but we are gonna see what is open the other weekends.

I'm still working on the bath vanity turned nightstands. They are done. . . . . . . . BUT,  I have decided to "tweek" them. So, you have to wait to see the pictures. Let's say two will be one, so two more to make one is needed. And I know where the two to make one is. In Bison!! You're saying. . . huh?

I also got my little project in my kitchen done. I added bun feet to my kitchen cabinets. Just a little something to make my cabinets look more like furniture. And I'm loving it!!

Have a GReAt week!!

productive. . . . .

Remember when I redid the long dresser for Michele's new BIG tv?? Well. . . . Look what I did for Marley girl!  On our last trip to The West Bottoms Jessica seen one of these, but it was painted hot pink. We thought it was so cute but when we went back it was already sold. Sooooo. . . . .this is Marley girls' new day hangout in the family room. And it fits in as the finish matches the tv stand.

Marley checking it out.

And those shelves we built for my 'craft corner'. . . . here it is. I FINALLY put my supplies away. And I love it!! <3 <3 My metal banner was of course bought in The West Bottoms. I originally had it hanging in my bathroom, but then thought it fit in better here. And the plus was I could use it to magnet those cute little cases too. I will put little buttons, brads n stuff in them.

And this morning. . . . I've already been busy out in the shed.
Imagine this. . . . . .
Bathroom vanity. . . . made into nightstands. . .
I'll let you know how this one turns out!! :-)

Sunday. . . . . funday. . . .

What a beautiful day! I can't believe how nice out is was. We even had the screens open and a nice breeze going thru the house. Just beautiful!! BUT. . . .

Have you heard the weather forecast? 80% chance of snow tomorrow night. And could get up to 2 inches. Now how silly is that!!

Back to my Sunday funday. . . . . . .

Today we worked in the bathroom. With the work of two, we got the plug in moved so that we could frame out the mirror. And it was just what was needed!! Every time I would walk into the bathroom, it looked. . . . . just blah. I just didn't know what it needed. That plug in just stood out. And I hated it!!
So, we moved it. And then framed. And then had to move the shelf. . . . again. But we got it! And I'm so happy with the frame. The wood came from the buildings that had been torn down from the Ummel homestead.

Pallet shelf that I got on my last trip to the West Bottoms in KC.

Hmmmmm. . . . . what next??

isn't she. . . . . . beautiful. . . . .

Mom and Dad forgot. Forgot that this was in their basement. In fact, they had three. One is now above their table. This one and theirs were yucky bright brass. Thank you Dad for fixing that! The third is white. And eventually I will be working on it. Right now the plan for that one is for my bathroom. But I have to get to so many other things first. :-)

Back to this one. . . . Last Sunday Mom, Dad, Courtney, Cody and Aunt Sharon came up and helped Roger wire it up. Well, Dad did. The rest of us were the spectators. And I am LOVING it!!
