 Melvin Johnson, 68, passed away February 25th, at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan. He was born November 16, 1945 in Manhattan, Kansas, the son of Alvin and Eva (Smith) Johnson. Melvin was a life-time area resident, having graduated from Manhattan High in 1963.

Melvin worked at Kansas State University Printing Service, retiring after 35 years. He later retired from the Riley County Transfer Station, where he enjoyed visiting with customers, seeing friends and making new ones.

He was drafted and served in the U.S. Army National Guard. He was a member of the American Legion and VFW. He served as Mayor of Randolph, KS for six years.

He was married to Kaye Shehi; they later divorced. On May 1, 2004 in Manhattan, he was married to Sherri A. Johnson. He enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, hunting, fishing, and any “handy-man” project. He was happy watching NASCAR, traveling, and collecting antiques with Sherri.

Sherri preceded him in death January 5, 2011. He was also preceded in death by his parents; two half-sisters: Virginia Sutton & Nadine Innes; and two half-brothers: Ralph & Clede Johnson.

Survivors include his children Bryan Johnson (Alicia) of Ft. Mill, SC and Sherilyn McRell (Larry) of Manhattan; five step-children: Angel Silva, Dawn Barfuss (Micah), Stormy Mester (Vaughn), Albert Silva (Krystal), and Secret Sams; three brothers: Evan Johnson (Janice), Alvan Johnson (Kristin), and Calvin Johnson; three sisters: Kathie Kaler (Duane), Karen Buckingham (Jim), and Sharon Baldon; four half-sisters: Nelda Hamilton, Marjorie Hale, Arlene Kittrell, and Bonnie Brown; 21 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, March 1st, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home with Father Joseph S. Popelka officiating. Interment will follow in Sunrise Cemetery in Manhattan.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 7:30 P.M. Friday at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home.
